HYDROGEN
We offer composite-overwrapped pressure vessels for high pressure hydrogen storage. Steelhead’s liners are made of robust, seamless aluminum completely overwrapped with durable epoxy impregnated carbon fiber composite. These cylinders feature large port openings with hydrogen-ready, stainless steel threaded connections that can house an in-tank valve and regulator. With virtually zero permeation of H2 gas, enhanced durability, predictable leak-before-burst failure characteristics and improved fast-fill capabilities compared to plastic lined vessels.

Steelhead hydrogen pressure vessels are a cost-efficient solution for gaseous storage for hydrogen fuel cell systems. We offer full service design, manufacturing and in-house testing capabilities to meet your exact design and certification requirements. Steelhead offers a range of standard sizes to best meet your design criteria.
CNG
Steelhead does offer CNG vessels certified for on-road use at 250 bar /3,600 psi.

Steelhead Composites’ lightweight 11 inches. (280 mm) diameter 3,600 psi (250 bar) CNG cylinders ranging in water volume of 30 Liters to 140 Liters. These CNG cylinders are aluminum lined fully overwrapped composite pressure vessels with 1-1/8 inches. (28.6 mm) diameter port opening on each end. One port of the CNG cylinder is fitted with a solenoid valve that integrates a thermally activated pressure relief device. Because of their construction using seamless aluminum liners, Steelhead Composites’ CNG cylinders can be counted on for being safe, gas-tight, robust, and tough against impact and abuse.

COMPOSITE PRESSURE VESSELS

Composite pressure vessels, or composite overwrapped pressure vessels (COPVs) includes vessels where there is no membrane / barrier and the vessel is solely used for gas.

These include tanks for industrial gases, aerospace needs, energy storage (e.g. natural gas and hydrogen fuel cell storage), and any other applications where a compressed gas is required. Composite pressure vessels are dominant where weight matters; compared to fluid power vessels, these vessels generally have smaller port openings and undergo fewer cycles.

Pressure Vessel Types

We design, manufacture and test pressure vessels of all types, including:

TYPE 1:
All metallic vessels — Steelhead can spin aluminum, carbon steel, stainless steel and titanium from 100mm/4″ diameter to 400mm/16″ diameter and lengths up to 2,700 mm / 9′
TYPE 2:
Metal vessel reinforced around hoop — Steelhead can wrap metallic liners with carbon fiber, fiberglass etc to increase strength with diameters up to 1,200 mm / 48″
TYPE 3:
Composite overwrapped metallic liners. Steelhead can design, engineer and manufacture vessels from 4L to 270L and operating pressures beyond 700 bar (10,000 psi). Our type 3 vessels are generally manufactured according to ISO 11119-2, though we have ample additional certifications depending on industry, application and geography
TYPE 4:
Composite overwrapped plastic liners. Steelhead has successfully deployed plastic lined vessels and has extensive experience in design of these vessels.
TYPE 5:
Liner-less vessels: Steelhead has experience and has manufactured vessels of this type for specialty applications
